The legendary performance of the St. Matthew Passion (Palm Sunday 1939) conducted by Willem Mengelberg has been spectacularly restored and will be available as a new edition in digital remix from mid-March 2024. The performance of Bach’s 2nd Orchestral Suite (op. 1931) has been added to this edition as a bonus track.
Once again, sound engineer Jochem Geene has created a beautiful document after a very intensive and time-consuming restoration. The results of this restoration, as well as the previous 2CD Mahler/Strauss and Beethoven, are simply stunning and further reveal the persuasive power of Mengelberg’s performances. Of course, the aim of publishing the St. Matthew Passion was also to get as close as possible to the experience of 1939.
